Description: True first edition, first printing in original black cloth boards. The boards are clean with only a few specks and slight wear to edges. The binding is strong with no cracks. The text is surprising bright for its age with no marking apart from very faint foxing to edge and a name in ink on the front endpaper. This is a scarce book. Very few copies were sold on publication in 1939. Much of the remaining stock was destroyed when Longman's warehouse was bombed in the Blitz of 1940. Longmans later issued what was left of this printing in grey cloth binding. Thus, this edition in the original black cloth is very rare.
