How to care for rare Irish books?
Looking after rare or first-edition books properly helps preserve their value and condition. Here’s how to care for them:
-
Handle with care: Support books fully and avoid pulling on the spine or leaving them face down
-
Store large books flat: Prevent warping by laying oversized books horizontally or using bookends when upright
-
Avoid sunlight: Keep books out of direct light to prevent fading and brittle pages
-
Keep conditions stable: Maintain consistent temperature and humidity to avoid mould and damage
-
Dust gently: Use a soft brush to remove dust from covers and page edges
-
Check for pests: Look out for signs of insects or rodents that could damage books
- Avoid DIY repairs: Don’t tape or glue damaged books – use a professional bookbinder instead
