Signed by the author on the f.e.p. using his real name, Brian O'Nolan. Originally published in 1939, O' Nolan's novel sold very badly despite critical acclaim and most copies were destroyed when the Longman's warehouse was bombed during the Blitz. This, MacGibbon and Kee's first printing, was the first widely available edition that brought the novel to the attention of the reading public, but only after the publisher had convinced a reluctant O'Nolan to reissue it. In publisher's black cloth covered boards lettered in gilt to spine. The contents are bright and clean with no spotting or browning. In the original dust jacket which is unclipped and unfaded; no tears or nicks. A better than very good copy.
